WASHINGTON—Negotiators for the White House and congressional leaders appeared to be making progress late Saturday toward a deal to resolve the federal debt crisis that has paralyzed Washington and rattled financial markets.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) abruptly delayed a late-night test vote on lifting the federal debt ceiling until 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon, and said the move was made at the request of the White House.
"There are negotiations going on at the White House now on a solution that will avert a catastrophic default on the nation's debt," Mr. Reid said shortly after 10 p.m.
